We have so enjoyed putting on our ‘poet’s eyes’ and looking at ordinary things in new, fresh ways this week. We have taken some of our observations and turned them into poems. We have also learned about ACROSTIC poetry and some of the highlights are below!

House D was very happy and fortunate to make a new friend, Ms. Gloria, from the Women’s Workforce! Ms. Gloria will be in our classroom Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 o’clock to noon for the next six weeks reading with us and helping us to learn our SIGHT WORDS.
To help us all learn a little bit more about Ms. Gloria (MG) our very own Emmett Beerbower (EB) interviewed her with questions he developed. EB: Do you have children? MG: I have two sons, Charles and Michael, and three grandchildren, Shakiaya, Michael Jr., and Tavon. EB: Do you like watermelon? MG: I love watermelon! EB: Do you like your job? MG: Yes, I love helping people; I love to see them happy! EB: Do you have a garage? MG: I have no garage. EB: What color car do you have? MG: I have a white car. EB: Do you have a cat or a dog? MG: I don’t have a cat or a dog. EB: What is your job? MG: I am a caregiver, helping special people that need special care.
Thanks, Emmett! You did a great job. If you happen to come across Ms. Gloria while visiting school, make sure to welcome her and ask her about the incredible work she is doing with our students. Thanks, and have a PEELERIFIC DAY!

A 5 year old reading a book to a 6’7″ power forward from the UNCG Men’s Basketball team!
Then picture this:
This same 6’7″ power forward reading a kids book to a group of K-1 students!
What great INSPIRATION and MOTIVATION for our kids! Thank you to Director of Basketball Operations, Brian Judski for bringing his players to Peeler to read with our kids. Tyler McNeely, Darius Sellers, and Kendall Bethea were all smiles as they took turns listening to ‘just right books’ from the K-1′s, then reading to our kids. Check out the slideshow and please leave a comment!
One of the highlights of our 2nd Quarter was our Nocturnal Animals Living Museum. Each child chose a nocturnal animal to study and research some basic facts. We worked both at school and at home to create a model and learn basic facts about diet, habitat, predators, and how nocturnal animals are very unique. Then we invited family, friends, faculty and staff, and even our own peers to visit our Living Museum as we shared our learning with our visitors. Watch our slideshow and see how creative and unique each project turned out. And I bet you can’t wait for our next Living Museum too. . .
P.A.C.E. night is our Peeler Arts Community Event. At the end of each trimester our students showcase their hard work and learning from the past 12 weeks. Dance performances, Music concerts, Violin and Keyboard demonstrations, and Art Gallery walks make these special evenings unforgettable. Here are some clips from our kids performances. Please leave comments and let us know what clip you are referring to when you leave a comment. We hope you enjoy!
Here is a whole class performance of our Poem of the Week, ‘The Pumpkin Poem’. You can follow along below – do you think you could memorize this poem in just 5 days? These kids are amazing!
Pumpkin Poem
One day I found two pumpkin seeds.
I planted one and pulled the weeds.
It sprouted roots and a big long vine.
A pumpkin grew, I called it mine.
The pumpkin was quite round and fat.
I really am quite proud of that.
But there’s one thing that I’ll admit.
That has me worried just a bit.
I ate the other seed you see.
Now will it grow inside of me?
I’m SO relieved that I have found
That pumpkins only grow in the ground.
Here is our first video performance of one of our Poems/Songs of the week. Every Monday we learn a new poem or song and work towards memorizing it by Friday. We have a special book in which we keep all our poems and songs. What a collection we have going. . .
COMING SOON: Look on the Poetry Page (tab at the top) for all the exciting poems and songs we have learned so far this year.
How were our first movie stars of the year? Please leave a comment after watching the video below! BRAVO!
The credits (from left to right): Matthew, Jameson, Julia, Thomas, Malik, Elias, and Kayla!
We had a special treat today during Center Time. Matthew’s family sent in an unusual fruit for us to taste. Kiwiberries originated in China. The vines produce a smooth-skinned fruit that is the “no fuzz”, “no peel” cousin of the traditional kiwifruit. They are small – about the size of a big grape or cherry. Here is what our class thought about them:
Our graph. Can you tell which one has the most?
We also learned a little about TALLY MARKS. You can play all sorts of number games with tallies. Just remember: 1,2,3,4,5 goes across! Then practice counting by 5′s. Count in the car, count in the shower, count before going to bed!
What do you notice about our graph? Leave us a comment!
We were TEAM RED as you can tell by the photos in our slide show. Look at the faces and the determination on our kids faces! Some photos are even blurry they were running so fast. Each child set a goal for laps around the track then asked for donations in support of our school and in support of their healthy choices. Peeler raised OVER $8000 for our school’s PTA! Way to go kids!
