B House Family Celebration

A close up of Cheniyah's Family Project

A close up of Cheniyah's Family Project

Our B House Family Celebration was a tremendous success.  We had tons of family members help us with our baking projects (and they kept the new Cooking Lab spotless too!).  We had tons of families donate supplies for the baking.  We had 23 projects that were shared during our Living Museum and an audience as well.  Just looking at the faces of our children showed how proud they were to talk about their family, traditions, heritage, and things they were thankful for!  Thank you to everyone!  Below is a slideshow with more music from Songs of Water, Mrs. Richardson’s band (it is my favorite song of theirs) AND the recipes for our delicious treats.  Maybe one of them will be a part of your next holiday celebration at home . . .

Ronan is running for cover!

My family is in Cleveland, Ohio right now visiting my Mom and my Grandma.  It is very cold and it even snowed!  Here are a couple of pictures of Ronan and Peter.  We had an exciting snowball fight.  They really got me good!  See you all on Monday.

Love,   Mr. MJ

ps. Did you notice the snow falling on our blog?  Do you know why it is colder in the NORTH, in places like Cleveland or the North Pole?  Please leave a comment and let me know what the weather is like in North Carolina, or wherever you are right now!Peter is getting ready to attack!

Do you remember our Field Trip to the Bicentennial and Bog Gardens?

Mr. Steen a.k.a. Tony Low

If not, here are some of our best memories to the music of our very own Mr. Steen.  He’s our Keyboard teacher and also known as Tony Low when holding a guitar!  Check out his website: www.myspace.com/tonylowmusic

Don’t forget there is a copy of our Bicentennial Garden scavenger hunt on the older post below. Take some family or friends to walk the trails over the Thanksgiving holiday!

Partner Reading

Terwayne is reading Jameson a "just right" book.

Terwayne is reading Jameson a "just right" book.

We have started Partner Reading this week and the children are off to a great start.  The goals of Partner Reading are simple:

  • —to give children an opportunity to work together
  • —to give the children an opportunity to learn from each other
  • —to promote oral reading fluency
  • —to focus on “just right” reading
  • —to build confidence
  • —to improve on oral language skills through book talks

The procedures of Partner Reading are even easier:

Ramsey is pointing to the words. Cole is listening.

Ramsey is pointing to the words. Cole is listening.

  • sit “hip-to-hip”
  • one person reads at a time
  • use quiet voices
  • point to the words as you are reading
  • have a book talk when you are finished
  • take turns reading

During each session I am looking for Partner Reading Royalty!  Those that are taking Partner Reading seriously, following the procedrues, being teachers and learners can be chosen to be King or Queen of Partner Reading.  Most days it is very hard to decide.

B House Family Projects

B House students taking home the posterboard.

B House students taking home the posterboard.

We are all very excited about our B House Autumn Family Celebration that will be held TUESDAY NOVEMBER 24th from 11:30-1:00!
We are excited because B House children will be sharing songs, sharing the desserts that we are baking all this week (4 batches of a Sweet Potato Crisp are ready to go!), sharing our families and our community, but also sharing our Family Projects in a Living Museum format.

These projects went home Tuesday. You probably saw the large piece of white cardboard. I hope that each and every one of you will take the time this week/weekend to make this project a priority and spend some very quality time learning more about your own family. I cannot wait, either, toB House Family Project Model see all the completed projects and spend some time Tuesday visiting the “Living Museum” and learning so much more about you and your family.

Here is a link to the B House Family Project. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Good luck. We look forward to seeing all wonderful work your family will do together. Projects are due Monday November 23!

Salad Day Success!

Can you see this seed?

Can you see this seed?

Do you see the seed at the end of this pencil?  We estimated that ONE SEED just like this produced about TWO BOWLS of lettuce that we enjoyed today!
Our Salad Day was a success and the proof wasDSC00986-150x150 the faces on our children.
We worked hard for our salad, going way back to early September when we planted our lettuce and radish seeds.  We watered them and watched them grow.  We weeded and made sure they had room to grow.   DSC00984-150x150Then we harvested the lettuce and radishes.  Cleaned them well and we even made the salad DSC00979dressings with herbs from our garden and a few store bought ingredients.
And you know what we realized?  We have a lot of lettuce left over and a lot of dressing.  It looks like we will be having another salad day soon!
DSC00976-150x150
Here are the Dressing Recipes (thank you to Mrs. Seawell for organizing and helping with this whole event – especially the dressing making!):

Vinaigrette

1 cup balsamic vinegar
1 cup olive oil
2 tbsp. chopped fresh herbs (we used parsley, rosemary, basil, lemon balm, and oregano)
Mix together and shake well before serving!
Creamy Herb Dressing

1 quart light mayo
1 quart plain low-fat yogurt
1 tsp. salt
4 Tbsp. chopped fresh herbs (we used basil, oregano, thyme, lemon grass, lemon balm, parsley)
Mix all together and store in the refridgerator!

‘Leaves, Leaves’ – a poem with rhythm

This poem was so easy to memorize once we figured out the rhythm. The instruments are rhythm sticks and the focus was steady beat. We are getting better every day! Enjoy these beautiful children. Thanks again to Jyece and Maria (Happy 11th Birthday Maria!) our CREW!

Peeler Walk-a-Thon 2009

Please watch this video. Think about how hard our children worked to run a whole mile or more (8 laps around the track is 1 mile!). Your pledges go right back into our classrooms. Pledges are due Friday November 6, but you can send them to school any time!
